Will Diesel Become a Popular Option?
The “Old Wives Tales” videos were originally released on YouTube only, but have recently been shown on TV after going viral. Describing the ads in a recent article from Automotive News, the following line appears, “Automaker hilariously turns diesel into something worth talking about.”

Given the fact that diesel engines are known for their fuel efficiency, maybe diesel should be a topic of conversation. Why should you consider diesel?
  • Fuel Economy: Vehicles that run on diesel typically get great mileage, delivering 25-30% better fuel economy than similarly performing gasoline engines. A study conducted in 2013 by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute compared certain diesel-powered vehicles with their gas-powered counterparts over a 3-5 year period of ownership, concluding that diesel owners saved $2,000-to $7,000 on fuel.
  • Durability: Necessarily built more ruggedly to withstand the rigors of higher compression, diesel engines will usually run much longer than gas-fueled engines before needing major repairs. While it is true that most diesel-powered vehicles have a higher purchase price, owners are able to hang onto them for hundreds of thousands of miles without having to worry about serious repairs. Several Mercedes-Benz models are on record for clocking more than 900,000 miles on their original engines.
  • Big Vehicles: There is no doubt that diesel engines work incredibly well in trucks, SUVs and other large vehicles. Due to the way it burns fuel, a diesel engine provides far more torque to the driveshaft than does a gasoline engine. So, diesel-powered trucks can haul and tow heavy items while retaining their fuel efficiency. It should also be noted that larger gas-burning automobiles are often referred to as “gas guzzlers” for their lack of fuel economy. Whereas, diesel-powered trucks and SUVs are still fairly fuel efficient.
A Possible Future for Diesel Engines

There was a time when most vehicle buyers thought of diesel engines as being slow, sluggish and undesirable. However, diesel technology is constantly being developed and improved. The diesel engines of today are far superior to their predecessors, and it looks like they will be even better in the future. Who knows? Maybe YOUR next car, truck or SUV will be fueled by diesel.
