Back To Diesel Products> Nano overdrive leaves parts cos gasping
MUMBAI: Tata Motors plans to raise production of Nanos to 1,200 a day at its brand-new factory in Gujarat’s Sanand by December, the furious pace in rolling out the world’s cheapest fourwheeler set to swell the pressure on automobile parts suppliers struggling to meet a frenzy for cars.

The company is operating on a single shift of eight hours and produces nearly 150 Nanos a day, or 4,500 a month, at Sanand, said people familiar with the plan, adding that its Pantnagar plant has a similar production schedule.

With auto parts suppliers already stressed in trying to meet a more than 25% rise in car sales since April, the development is certain to add to their worries, say company executives and industry watchers. A few car manufacturers had to import critical parts such as batteries, tyres, windscreens, glass-packs and wheel rims from South-East Asian countries after supplies fell short.

“Smaller component companies are unable to keep pace with rising requirements,” said Shriram Pistons managing director Ashok Taneja, adding that the bigger ones are seeking higher prices. The soaring demand for cars — sales are expected to touch 6 million units a year by 2015 from 2 million — has driven component suppliers to join vehicle makers in amplifying capacities. Leading car manufacturers are working at full capacity and looking to establish more factories. The component industry is expected to invest nearly $2 billion to add capacity this year.

“The domestic supply of components is improving as we are all investing heavily in capacity expansion . Large players such as Maruti-Suzuki , Tata Motors and Hyundai have targeted growth upwards of 10% this year,” said a Delhi-based component player.

PwC auto practice leader Abdul Majeed said all component makers must have a strong manufacturing capability to be price-competitive in the long term. Tata Motors, meanwhile, has zeroed in on auto parts vendors such as Bosch, Sriram Pistons, Anand Group, Federal Moghul Group, Minda and Sona Group for the diesel version of Nano model planed for the first half of 2011.

Vendors refused to divulge details, citing a confidentiality clause.

The Tatas will rely on component offshoot TACO for the diesel variant and shipments to Europe and the US, the persons close to the company said. Bosch will continue to be a major supplier of fuel injections, brakes and transmission parts, they added.
