The word

The D3 is a new version of the more common 2.4L in the volvo lineup (under various configurations and names), but with a shorter stroke to lower displacement to 2.0L. It's also been optimized with a piezoelectric fuel injector to minimize consumption by giving exceptionally rapid and precise pulses under high pressure.

To make up for the smaller stroke, the car's turbocharger has been tuned to give higher torque at lower revs.

The newly-developed D3 will be available in the S60 as before, but also now in the S80, V70, and XC60 and 70 models. Fuel consumption ranges from 39.9mpg (US avg) in the XC models to 44.4mpg (US avg) in the S80.

The D3 provides 163hp and 400Nm (295lb-ft) of torque.
